Brixham to Berry Head Walk

If you’re coming to Devon and planning on visiting the English Riviera, this walk is one not to be missed!

Starting in the colourful seaside town of Brixham, the route leads you through the harbour and uphill to Berry Head Nature Reserve, where you’ll find one of the UK’s shortest lighthouses. Not only that, but on a clear day the views are incredible, and if you’re lucky, you may even spot dolphins. Unfortunately, we weren’t so lucky!

Did You Know?

Berry Head Lighthouse is only 5 metres (16 feet) high. It was first lit in 1906, after vessels struggled to navigate the rocky coastline around Torbay.

Location

Brixham is located in South Devon and forms one of the three towns that make up the English Riviera.

The Route

Follow the map as you walk and you shouldn’t get lost. Make sure your location is turned on so you can see exactly where you are. Alternatively, download the GPX file and use it with your preferred route-tracking app.

Step-by-Step Directions

1.

Starting at Oxe Cove Car Park, take the path heading south-east into Brixham. Follow the path as it leads you around the harbour.

2.

Optional: As you reach the pier, walk out to Brixham Breakwater Lighthouse. Return back the same way.

3.

After your detour to Brixham Breakwater, head through the small car park and take the steps which lead you up onto the road.

4.

Turn left and follow the road uphill until you reach a footpath just after passing the Berry Head Hotel.

5.

Take the footpath as it winds through the woods, passing the Guardhouse Cafe on your right (they do great cream teas), all the way up to Berry Head Lighthouse.

If you’re unsure at any point, refer to the map.

6.

After enjoying the views from Berry Head, retrace your steps back down until you reach the road again.

7.

Turn right onto the road and follow it downhill, passing the Berry Head Hotel on your right-hand side.

8.

After a short distance, look for a signpost for the South West Coast Path. Follow the coastal path back down into Brixham, passing the famous Shoalstone Seawater Pool on your right-hand side.

9.

Continue around the harbour and retrace your steps back to Oxe Cove Car Park, where the walk began.
