The Hverir Mud Pools are a must-see attraction, just outside Myvatn, located just off the famous Icelandic Ring Road, Route 1.
The mud pools are one of my favourite attractions in Iceland. They are very impressive to see. They are something not to be missed when driving Route 1, just as long as you can handle the smell of sulphur, while watching the mud boil and bubble away.
While your there, look out for Lake Stora Vita; a lake inside a crater.
There are a car park and a map showing a walking route around them The full route should take you around 30 minutes to complete. They recommend not spending too long at the mud pools due to the sulphur fumes. Inhaling too much can make you feel unwell.
When I visited my family back in August 2007, they were free to walk around.
If you are feeling adventurous while you are there, you can do the hiking route on Namafjall Mountain. We didn’t have time to do this, as after visiting the mud pools, we were heading over to the active volcano, Hofur for a walk.
