Fordon is a lovely village in the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds. It located just 8 miles from the lovely Yorkshire seaside town, Scarborough. It has one of the smallest churches in the UK.
The walk is 5.3 miles long circular. The route was a lovely quiet route, leading you through the dry valleys, and onto the tops. Part of the route joins onto the Yorkshire Wold’s Way and the Centenary Way long-distance footpaths.
Location
The walk starts and finishes in the East Yorkshire village of Fordon, near the North Yorkshire border line.
Parking
Fordon is only a small place. We managed to get parked on a gravel bay at the side of the road, near the church, just up the hill from the village. We did the walk on a Saturday lunch, and there was hardly anyone around so finding somewhere to park should not be a problem.
The Route
Follow this map, as you walk the route, you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are, on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.
1.
Starting at the crossroads in the village of Fordon. Walk into Fordon, passing farmhouses on your right-hand side. Look out for a public footpath sign on your right-hand side, leading towards the red telephone box. Take the path and head through the gate.
2.
Carry on walking forwards. Head through another gate, and follow the footpath through the woodland area and down through the dry valleys, passing through many more gates. Eventually, you will see a path going off to your left-hand side.
3.
Ignore the path going off to your left-hand side. Instead, carry along the same path, leading you along the bottom of the dry valley. Look out for the random rugby goal post and rubber ring. Eventually, you will reach a crossroad path junction. At the crossroads, take the path slightly towards your right-hand side, leading you across the field, along Langs Dale. When we walked the route, there were so many lambs playing around in the field.
4.
Eventually, you reach another path junction, marking the Yorkshire Wold’s Way and the Centenary Way. Take the path to your right-hand side, leading you steeply up the hillside. Follow the path up until you reach the road.
5.
Turn towards your right-hand side onto the road. The road is a quiet road to walk along with a large grass verge. Follow the road until you reach the bend in the road. Straight in front, you will see a track going off the road. Follow the track passing the cottages and a campsite.
6.
Carry on following the track along the tops of the fields and into a woodland area. The path will slowly lead you down Cans Dale and onto the road which leads back into Fordon.
7.
Turn towards your right-hand side, and walk along the road for a very short distance. Shortly, you should see a gate on your right-hand side. Go through the gate and follow a small footpath along the side of the hill, passing through the trees, until you reach a track. Please note: the footpath isn’t a very well-worn footpath. You can just make out where it is.
8.
As you reach the track, turn towards your left, heading downhill towards a gate. Go through the gate and turn towards your right-hand side onto the road. Follow the road back towards Fordon, where you started the walk from.
