Berwick-upon-Tweed is the most northern town in England. Located in Northumberland, just a few miles from the Scottish Borders, it’s a place not to be missed!
Berwick is a town full of so much history! A town known as a definitive border town. And if history isn’t your cup of tea, don’t worry, Berwick is a beautiful place to have a potter around.
Here is how to spend a day in Berwick-upon-Tweed:
Walk the Old Town Wall
Walking the Old Town Wall is a must-do! It is are the best preserved in the whole of Europe!
The full walk around the wall is just over a mile long. As you walk around the wall, you get to learn about the history of the place. There are little information boards to read, telling you a bit about the past, and the ruins that are left behind.
Not only that, you get some of the best views of the town and the harbour too!
Lookout For The Royal Border Bridge
The beautiful Royal Border Bridge is one huge viaduct! With 28 arches, it’s probably one of the biggest I’ve ever seen!
The bridge is used for trains only and was the last link to be built in 1850, for the London to Edinburgh train line.
Take A Walk Down Berwick Pier
Nothing beats an evening stroll down the pier to a lighthouse! There’s just something so relaxing about it, right? If you are lucky, you might see some seals bobbing up and down in the harbour. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any!
Take A Boat Trip
Enjoy being out on the water? There are a few different boat trips you can go on. You can cruise down the river, passing under the beautiful bridges, or you can head out to the sea with a good chance of seeing dolphins.

Visit Berwick Barracks
Interested in the history of Berwick? Then a visit to Berwick Barracks is a must! There is a small fee to pay to visit the museum.
For anyone who doesn’t know, the barracks is a former military installation of the British Army. It was one of the first in England to be purpose built! Today, it is just a museum, and no longer needed as a home to the military.
