Day 12 of my 2-week road trip
Tropical Islands – Sachsenhausen – Berlin – Dresden – Prague – Vienna – Devin Castle – Sandberg – Bratislava – Lake Balaton – Bokodi – Budapest
Bokodi is a floating village, located 49 miles west of Budapest. The houses are used as a summer home. The houses are built on stilts, on an artificial lake, Bokodi Lake, created in 1961 by the Oroszlány Thermal Power Company. Since the water was kept warm by the power plant, the lake never used to freeze. Over the years, it had become a popular spot for fishing and angling, all year round. Sadly, in 2015, the power plant shut and the lake waters no longer kept warm during the winter.
What was once a popular fishing location, is now a popular photographer’s location. People from all over the world, travel to take photos of the houses on stilts, just like ourselves.
To find Bokodi Floating Village, you have to be prepared to travel off the beaten track. We drove down a dust track to Bokodi Lake. The area looked a bit like an abandoned residential area. We parked up on the edge of the dirt track and walked down to the lake. When we arrived at the houses on stilts, there was a lot of work going on, and couldn’t access a lot of it. Also, we were not allowed to walk on the broad walks down to the houses on stilts, as it was private property.
We managed to get a few good photos and it was certainly interesting to see. However, we did feel very out of place, like we shouldn’t have been there, even though there were no signs saying so. It felt as though we were being paparazzi; sneaking up on people’s homes, taking photos without their permission.
