If you are looking for an easy, family-friendly hike, which takes you up high, bags a trig, and provides fantastic views over Llyn Clywedog, then this is the hike for you!
The walk up Bryn-Y-Fan is a short 2.5-mile walk along a well-treaded grass path. Some fitness is required, as you climb a total elevation of 150 metres (500 feet), and good footwear is needed for grip.
Location
Llyn Clywedog is located in Mid-Wales, in the beautiful Cambrian Hills. Located not too far from Llanidloes, on the headwaters of the River Severn, and provides drinking water to the West Midlands.
Parking
There is a car park at the start of the trail called Bwlch-Y-Gle.
SatNav address: Bwlch-Y-Gle Dam, Llanidloes SY18 6NU
The Route
Follow this map as you walk the route, and you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.
It’s an out-and-back route!
1.
Starting from the car park at Bwlch-Y-Gle Dam, head out of the car park and turn to your right-hand side onto the road. Walk along the road for a very short distance until you see a path going off to your right-hand side.
2.
Take the path going off to your right-hand side and follow until you reach a path going off to your left-hand side.
If you are unsure at any point, please do refer to the map!
3.
Take the path going off to your left-hand side and follow it until you reach another path junction.
4.
At the path junction, take the path forking off to your right-hand side and follow it as it leads you up the hillside. Eventually, you will reach the trig at the summit of Bryn-Y-Fan.
5.
Once you’ve finished enjoying the incredible views at the summit, start making your way back down, retracing your steps all the way back down to Bwlch-Y-Gle Dam, where you started the walk from.
If you are unsure at any point, please refer to the map!
