Cottam is a little hamlet, located in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Wold’s.
This 5-mile walk takes you along the dry valleys and up to Cottam medieval village. Look out for some ruins of the Church of St Mary, dating back to the 1800s. Today, it is a grade II listed building, with mental fencing around it. Not sure if that is to protect us from the falling tiles, or to protect the church. The route then takes you along the tops of the Yorkshire Wold’s, seeing fantastic views for miles and miles.
Please note: this walk leads you through a bull field. However, at the time we walked it in April, there weren’t any bulls in the field.
Location
Cottam is located roughly 16 miles north of the town of Beverley and roughly 4 miles east of the village of Sledmere.
This walk starts and finishes along Driffield Road Close, just down the road from a little hamlet of Cowlam.
Parking
To find to start of the route along Driffield Road Close, I recommend using the map below. You can park on the green grass verge, right beside the start of the walk. Just make sure you are not blocking any gates or the road.
The Route
Follow this map, as you walk the route, you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are, on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.

Starting along Driffield Road Close, take the footpath marked Public Bridleway, along Cottam Well Dale. Follow the footpath along the dry valley and up to the ruins of the Church of St Mary. As you walk along the dry valleys, you may find ourselves walking through an areas with a bull.

Head through the gate and follow the Public Bridleway, straight ahead, over to the site of the Medieval Village Of Cottam. Follow the path off to your right-hand side, through Cottam, following the Public Bridleway, until you reach a crossroads.

At the crossroads, turn to your right-hand side and follow the path along the tops and down into the valley, to Driffield Road Close.

As you reach Driffield Road Close, turn towards your right-hand side and walk along the road, back to where you started the route from.
