How I Tamed the Wolf: Living with Lupus

I’ve got some big news today……..

During the last 2 years, I’ve been working on something very special. I’ve been writing a book. A book I hope will help many others out there, not just with Lupus, but with other chronic illnesses too. A book I wished I had when I was first diagnosed with Lupus. A book that shares my journey from pre-diagnosis to now. A book that acts as a self-help guide to others. A book that share’s why I can live the life I do today. How I am able to climb mountains, workout, travel the world and do the things I love once again.

This week’s blog is dedicated to my book launch.

I’m hoping this week’s blog will help you understand what to expect from my book, if it’s something you will find useful to read, and/or to help you decide if it’s a perfect gift for a loved one this Christmas.

Where It All Started

About 3 years ago I was in a bad place, both physically and mentally. My illness had deteriorated! I couldn’t climb mountains, I couldn’t walk to work, I even struggled to do my weekly food shop. I was issued with a blue disability badge, had to use a chair in the shower, and I was on the verge of needing a wheelchair. My mental health wasn’t much better either. I was so unhappy. I didn’t like what my life had become. The things I loved doing, I could no longer do. I didn’t feel like me anymore. I was living a life that wasn’t making me happy anymore.

In 2019, in the lead-up to Christmas, I decided it was time to do something about it. I wasn’t ready to accept what my life had become. So I took my illness into my own hands. I did hours and hours of research, over months and months. There wasn’t an easy answer. But I was determined to find something that would work!

Slowly, as we headed into 2020, I begin to make changes. As I did, I noticed my quality of life started to improve. At first, I thought it was all too good to be true. But as the months went by, my quality of life went on the up and up. As the months went by, I started reintroducing the things I love back into my life.

Today, I am in a very happy place in my life once again. I can do the things that make me so happy, the things I love doing. I can climb mountains, go out for runs, lift weights, travel, walk to work, and hopefully this ski season I will be back on my skis again.

I’m Not Saying I’ve Found A Cure

If you read my blogs weekly, you will know I still suffer from Lupus. Sadly, I haven’t found a cure. Maybe one day? This book isn’t about finding a cure. It’s about finding a way to improve your quality of life. It’s about being able to do some of the things you love to do. It’s about living that life you want to live, despite battling a chronic illness. It’s about reducing the number of flares you get.

Today, I get on a lot better with the wolf. Yes, I do still have flares. Yes, I still have Lupus. But my life is so different now compared to 3 years ago. I feel I have control over the wolf, instead of it being the other way round.

I Made One Big Change

To get my life to where I am today, I made one big change. This one big change and the impact it had on my life, was the drive for me to write this book. A change that completely changed my life.

If I can change my quality of life doing what I did, hopefully, it can help so many others too. Not just with Lupus, but so many other chronic illnesses too. Even if I manage to help just one other person, I will be so happy.

What Else to Expect

My book isn’t solely about how I tamed the wolf. There are so many more chapters too. I talk about dealing with mental health with a chronic illness, travelling with a chronic illness, working out with a chronic illness, and even added some of my favourite, healthy recipes, that are easy to do and full of goodness.

Even if you are somebody who doesn’t suffer from a chronic illness, this book still may be of interest to you. If you want to get to know about my journey from pre-diagnose to now, it’s all in there. From hospital stays to trialing different medications. From all my highs to all my lows. The book is raw, just like I am here on my blogs. I write it just as it is. Vulnerable with no sugar-coating on anything. You can even enjoy some photos of my manky toes when my Raynaud’s was at its worse. (Or maybe you might want to flick past that bit! They are pretty gross!)

I feel like I’ve given you a good little summary of my book. If you have any question’s about my book, please feel free to contact me.
