Knockan Crag
Hiking NC500 Scottish Highlands Walks

Hiking Knockan Crag

Knockan Crag is a lovely, little walk to do. Perfect if you are driving the NC 500, or any over road trips, and want to get out and stretch your legs. Or even no road trips and you just want a little walk to do, or the weather may not be too good to get up high. There are so many different reasons why this walk could be perfect for you!

Knockan Crag is located in the North West Highlands Geopark, in the Assynt region. The area was formed 500 million years ago, leaving this very impressive landscape for us to enjoy today.

The walk is just under 2-miles, along a well-marked path. However, make sure you have the correct footwear and clothing as the path can get slippery, and you can be exposed to all weathers along the route. It may only be a short walk, by the views are incredible! On a clear day, you will see magnificent views over Assynt Mountains!

This route follows the NatureScot Knockan Crag walking trail from the Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve & Visitor Centre.

Location

Knockan Crag is located in the Assynt region, just south of Elphin, and about a 20-minute drive north from Ullapool.

Parking

There is a medium-size car park at the Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve & Visitor Centre where the trail starts from.

The Route

Follow this map, as you walk the route, you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are, on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.

1.

Starting at Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve & Visitor Centre, head over to where the trailhead starts. There is a signpost making the start of the route. If you are unsure, please check on the map.

2.

Follow the path north, as it leads you along the edge of the crag, ascending slowly. You should pass an information area and a giant stone ball on your right-hand side.

3.

Continue to follow the path as it leads up onto the tops of Knockan Crag. You should eventually reach a stone sign, pointing to the viewpoint. Follow the path to the viewpoint.

4.

Once you’ve finished enjoying the views over the Assynt Mountains, retrace your steps back for a very short distance, until you rejoin onto the original path you were on. Follow the path south, along the tops of Knockan Crag.

5.

Eventually, the path will start to zig-zag down, back towards the car park, where you started the walk from.
