Alnwick Castle is a castle and country house, located in Alnwick. Not only is it the seat of the 12th Duke of Northumberland, but the 11th-century house has also been used for many great filming locations; including Downtown Abbey and Harry Potter. Adjacent to the castle, there is the beautiful Alnwick Gardens to have a walk around.

Tickets

To visit, you can book your tickets online or pay at the door. If you book your tickets in advance online, as we did, you save 10%. Our tickets cost us £25.89 each, which covered excess of the castle and the gardens. If you wish to visit just one of the attractions, you can buy separate tickets.

Parking

We parked free of charge in the centre of Alnwick. It is only a small car park and gets full very quickly. The castle and gardens have their own large car park. To park there, it cost you £3 for the full day.

The Castle

Alnwick Castle is a beautiful 11th Century castle. You can walk around the castle grounds, walk along a small section of the wall, have a look around the stately rooms, there is a dragon quest for the kids, quirky animals to see and hold and if you feeling adventurous, you can even attend broomstick flying lessons. The broomstick flying lessons are free of charge and is more for the kids. However, all adults are welcome. The lesson lasts for 30 minutes. If you do want to get booked onto one, make sure you get to the castle early, as they do get booked up quickly.

The Gardens

Alnwick Gardens are lovely to walk around, have a picnic in, or just sit back and relax. There are beautiful swinging chairs to relax on, a fountain show that runs once an hour at half-past if you are feeling brave there is a poison garden tour, a maze to get lost in, and a treehouse with swinging bridges. If you are feeling peckish, there are plenty of eating places to choose from.
