Zion National Park, Utah, is famous for its steep red cliffs and wading through the canyon waters, hiking the famous Zion Narrows.
We only spent the afternoon in the park. It wasn’t long enough to see everything in the park, but it certainly gave us a great taste of what the park had to offer!
Here is what we did, back in August 2014:
Canyon Overlook Trail
The Canyon Overlook Trail is 1-mile roundtrip that leads you to an amazing viewpoint, looking over the Zion Canyon. You will need to allow yourself an hour to complete this hike.
The walk isn’t too strenuous and there are railings to hold onto are certain spots along the route. The hardest part of the route is the steps at the beginning. After that, the route is mainly flat. You come back along the same path, back to the car. It is not a circular route.
It is best to do it either first thing in the morning or later in the day, as there is not a lot of parking. They do have an overflow car park, east along Highway 9. Whichever car park you park in, there is only a short walk to the start of the trail.
The start of the walk is located on the right, on Highway 9, near the ranger station for the tunnel.
Zion Canyon Scenic Drive
The Zion Canyon Scenic Drive was stunning! There are a few to choose from. We did the Scenic Byway, from Highway 9 to Mt. Carmel Junction. It is 54-miles longs and will take around 90-minutes to drive.
Along the route, you will pass through the steep red cliffs and through the famous Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel, which is 1-mile in length. Please note that traffic may be restricted to one way at a time several times during the day to accommodate larger vehicles e.g. RVs and buses.
