Ben A’an, located in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, is a great little mountain to climb, but with rewarding views at the summit. The mountains sits at, 454 metres (1,491 feet) above sea level, between Loch Katrine and Loch Achray.
Even though it’s only a short climb, the right mountain gear is essential! At the end of the day, it is a mountain. Therefore, it must be treated like a mountain. The path leading to the summit is steep and can get slippery when wet. Also, the weather can change quite suddenly. Only because it’s sunny and warm at the bottom, doesn’t mean it will be the same on the summit. Be prepared!
This route up Ben A’an is pretty straightforward. You go up and down the same way on a well-marked footpath. The route is just over 2.5 miles return, making it a perfect half a day walk.
Location
Ben A’an is located in the beautiful Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, just 36 miles north of Glasgow, and 10 miles west of Callander.
Parking
There is a pay and display car park, located at the trailhead for Ben A’an. The car park is only small, so I recommend getting there early. At the time we visited, the car park cost £3 for an all-day ticket.
The Route
Follow this map, as you walk the route, you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are, on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.

Starting at Ben A’an car park, cross over the road and head onto the footpath marked Ben A’an. Follow the footpath, over the wooden footbridge, across some stepping stones. Keep following the until you see it folk off to your right-hand side. Follow the footpath steeply up through the trees and onto the summit.

Once you’ve enjoyed your time at the summit, taking in all the great views it has to offer, start making your way down, retracing your steps. Follow the same footpath, all the way back down towards the car park.
