family days out Netherlands Road Trips

Edam

Edam is a town, located in North Holland, just 23 km northeast, from the capital, Amsterdam. The beautiful Dutch town is famous for its cheese, Edam cheese.

However, Edam is not just about cheese. Edam is a picturesque, little town. It has old shipping warehouses, quiet cobblestone streets, hand-operated drawbridge, and picture-perfect canals.

Ok, I am not going to lie, the main reason for our visit, was to visit the famous cheese market and to enjoy some Edam cheese at it’s home.

Cheese Market

If you are planning a trip to Edam, I recommend visiting on a Wednesday. Every Wednesday, they host their traditional cheese market. It starts at 10.3o and lasts till 12.30. However, I do recommend arriving before 10 am to get a seat!

This cheese market is not your average weekly market. The locals dress in their traditional Dutch clothes and perform a show on how cheese selling used to be at markets. It was fantastic! The best bit, you get a chance to sample lots of cheese too!
