King’s Cave is a very famous walk to do on the Isle of Arran. In fact, King’s Cave is the most famous cave on the whole island!
King’s Cave got its name after the King, Robert Bruce. It is believed by many, he hid in this cave to save his life, after losing a battle. While he hid in the cave, he spent his hours watching a spider fall and climb back up, over and over again, and it tried to spin its web.
The walk to the King’s Cave is only a short, 3.5-mile walk, yet it provides some of the most beautiful views on the island! The route is fairly easygoing, on a well-marked path, making it suitable for a great family walk. However, the path can get muddy and slippery when wet, so I do recommend the correct footwear to be worn!
Location
King’s Cave is located just north of Blackwaterfoot, on the west coast of the Isle of Arran.
Parking
There is a small National Trust car park at the start of the trailhead for King’s Cave. At the time we visited, it was free to park.

The Route
Follow this map, as you walk the route, and you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are, on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.
Walk the route anti-clockwise!
1.
Starting in King’s Cave National Trust car park, head over to the information boards. Facing the information boards, you should see a path going off to your right-hand side. Take the path and follow it along, and down to the oceanfront (Kilbrannan Sound).
If you are unsure at all, please check the map!
2.
Walk south along the stony beach, until you see a little footpath going off to your left-hand side. Take the footpath and follow it up towards King’s Cave.
Feel free to head inside the cave!
3.
Once you’ve finished admiring King’s Cave, carry on along the little footpath, travelling south along the beach. Very shortly, you will pass another cave. Continue through the cave, heading south along the beach. Very shortly, look out for a path going up the hillside, on your left-hand side.
4.
Take the path up the hillside, and follow it as it winds through the forest, all the way back to the car park, where you started the walk.
What out for little water voles along the way! We accidentally nearly stood on one!
