Hiking Artist’s Bluff: The White Mountains’ Most Iconic Viewpoint

One of the most iconic trails in the White Mountains, Artist’s Bluff is a hike you absolutely shouldn’t miss!

This short 1.5-mile loop takes you over two summits — Artist’s Bluff and Bald Mountain — both offering incredible panoramic views.

Elevation gain: approx. 380 ft (115 m).

In autumn, the entire landscape becomes a patchwork of gold, red, and orange, making it one of the most photographed spots in New Hampshire.

My Biggest tip…….

Because of its popularity, the trail can get very busy — especially during fall foliage. My biggest tip: avoid weekends in October if you can. We hiked it on a Thursday afternoon and while it was busy, it was still manageable.

When we visited, park rangers were encouraging hikers to follow the loop anticlockwise to help with foot traffic. Many people ignored this though, often hiking only to Artist’s Bluff and back, missing Bald Mountain entirely — which is a shame, as the second summit offers its own amazing views!

Location

Artist’s Bluff is located in Franconia Notch State Park, in the northwest part of the White Mountains.
It sits between the towns of Franconia and Lincoln.

Parking

There is a large car park at the trailhead, clearly signposted Artist’s Bluff.
When we visited (Thursday afternoon, early October), parking was free and there were plenty of spaces.

However, it’s known to fill up at weekends during peak fall!

Once you have finished soaking in the views over Echo Lake, Cannon Mountain, and the wider Franconia Notch valley, head back on the path you were on. Very shortly, you should reach a path going off to your right-hand side.

7.

Take the path, and follow it as it rises and falls along the ridge, towards Bald Mountain. After a while, you should reach a path junction, signposted Bald Mountain.

8.

Take the path going off to your right-hand side, and follow the rocky path up, it as it leads you to the summit of Bald Mountain.

9.

Once you’ve finished enjoying the 360-degree views across Cannon Mountain and down through the Franconia Notch valley, begin making your way back down the same path you came up. Follow the trail until you reach the familiar path junction.

10.

At the path junction, take the path going off to your right-hand side, and follow it down off the mountain side, until you reach another path junction.
