Hiking Guide To Grunas Falls

Grunas Falls, also known as Theth Falls, is one true gem! The 30-metre-high waterfall, located in Theth National Park, is one not to be missed on your trip to Albania! A waterfall that makes you feel so tiny!

The walk to Grunas Falls isn’t a difficult trail. The walk starts and finishes in the Village of Theth, and follows a wall-marked path up to the falls. Depending on where you start the route, depending on how far the route is. We started it from our Guesthouse, Bujtina Miqesia, located at the south end of Theth. From here, the route out-and-back, is 3 miles long. However, if you are to start the route further north in Theth, the route is more likely to be 4 miles, out-and-back.

Location

Grunas Falls is located in the heart of the Albanian Alps, in the beautiful Theth National Park. Just one hour’s drive from the City of Shkoder, Albannia’s most Northern City.

Parking

If you are staying in Theth, I would leave your vehicle at your accommodation and start your walk from there. If you are driving from Shkoder just for the day, you can park your car in the centre of Theth. There are a few gravel areas where you can park, including the car park opposite the mini market. Just make sure you are parked sensibly, and not blocking anyone or anything.

The Route

Follow this map, as you walk the route, and you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are, on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.

Please note: the route starts from the south end of the Village of Theth. If you are starting from the centre of Theth, follow the gravel road, travelling south through the village, until you reach the start point of this route. As you head south through the village, you should notice the river on your right-hand side.

1.

Starting from the south end of the village of Theth, follow the gravel road south until you see a path forking off to your right-hand side.

Please note: the trail is marked with white and red markers, painted on rocks, as shown on the photo below.

2.

Take the path and follow it as it leads you along the valley. Eventually, you will reach a path junction. You can either take the little path, which will lead you to a bridge, or take the wider path, which will lead you to some stepping stones. The choice is yours! If you decide to head across the bridge, the path will merge onto the wider path, very shortly after.

3.

Shortly after the river crossing, you should see a path forking off to your left-hand side. Take the path and follow it as it leads you past a Guesthouse and along the valley. Eventually, you will reach a river.

4.

At the river, take the path going off to your left-hand side, leading you steeply up the mountainside. After a short, steep climb up, you will arrive at Grunas Falls.

5.

Once you have finished enjoying your time at the waterfall, start making your way back down, retracing your steps back to the Village of Theth, where you started the route.
