Skiing in Kransjka Gora is probably not the first thing that comes to your mind when mentioning skiing! But why not? Why not go skiing in the Julian Alps, in Slovenia?
Kranjska Gora is an alpine ski resort, located in northwestern Slovenia, near the mountains and glacial lakes of Triglav National Park, and not too far from the Austrian border. The resort is less than an hour’s drive away, from the airport, making it a great resort for a long weekend of skiing or snowboarding.
The Slopes
If you are a beginner or you just enjoy skiing down blue runs, then Kranjska Gora is the best ski resort in Slovenia, for you. 50% of the resort is covered in blue runs. For anyone who does like more of a challenge, there are red and black runs too. The resort consists of a total of 20km worth of runs. 10km of that are blue slopes, 8km are red slopes, and just 2km of black runs.
Unfortunately, on our visit in January, not all of the 20km of runs were open. Sadly, the resort lacked snowfall, so only a few of the runs were open. The ones that were open, were the ones that had snow machines, making the snow for the runs. As we were only there for the day, there were still plenty of runs for us to choose from.
In my opinion, I thought the slopes were great for beginners. There were plenty of gently, wide slopes. The only downside was the queueing for the lifts. However, we did visit on a Saturday. I can imagine most ski resorts get busy on a weekend. It’s a resort I would like to revisit and try out more of their blue runs, and maybe even some red runs too!
Lift Passes
You can purchase a range of different types of lift passes; from a 2-hour lift pass to a 7-day lift pass. As we were only there for the morning, we choose a 2-hour lift pass, which is also the shortest time you can get a lift pass for. At the time we visited, in 2020, a 2-hour adult lift pass cost you €25.50 with an added deposit of €5, which you get back if you return the lift pass at the end of your session. To purchase the lift passes, head to the bottom of the blue slope, Mojca 2. The lift pass booths are located on the left-hand side of the cafe. (That’s your left when you stood facing the cafe).
Ski/Snowboard Hire
Hiring your equipment is very easy and you do not need to book in advance. There are 2 different ski rental places; Sport Bernik, Intersport, and SkiSchool. We hired ours from Sport Bernik, Intersport as they were slightly cheaper. In 2020, we paid €11 for half-a-day ski hire and €15 for half-a-day snowboard hire. You can hire for half a day, full-day, or even for several days. You can hire just the skis/snowboard if you have your own boots and helmet, or you can hire it all. The whole process of hiring the equipment was fast and easy.
Parking
There is plenty of parking at the Resort. However, be careful as some street car parking has restricted times, so do check when parking your car. The car parks are parking metres, so make sure you have some cash on you, as I am not sure if they take card payments or not.
Food
There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from. We ate at a place called Vapa. The menu was only small, however, the food was delicious and great value for money. In 2020, we paid €18 which is about £15, for 2 burgers with chips and 2 coffees.
