Snow Village

The Snow Village is located in the Finnish Lapland. It is one incredible hotel made completely out of ice. It gets built every November and closes in April, leaving it to melt as the Artic Summer arrives. The average temperature inside is -5! It took 20 million kilograms of snow and 350,000 kilograms of natural ice to build this amazing place.

If you’re brave enough to face the cold, there are hotel rooms that you can stay in for the night. Not only that, there is an ice bar if your feeling thirsty, an ice restaurant if you’re hungry, an ice slide for some fun, and an ice cinema if you’re bored. If you are planning a wedding, there’s even an ice chapel too!

The Theme

Every at the Snow Village there is a different theme. The year we visited was the Game of Thrones theme.

Getting There

The Snow Village is located just outside Yllas National Park, and not too far from Kittila airport. It is easy to drive too, just as long as you don’t mind driving down a quiet lane, completely covered in snow! We found the driving fine, as longs as you take it slow and steady.

Admission Cost

The year we visited, it cost €15 to look around the Snow Village. You can pay at the door. Car parking is free with no time limit.

Hungry?

If you are feeling peckish on your visit, there is a little log cafe. It’s a great place to warm up from the ice hotel, have a bite to eat or enjoy a lovely warm drink. I highly recommend their lovely warm berry juice. It’s a very popular drink in Lapland, made with locally grown berries. It’s delicious and warms your body right through from the freezing cold temperatures outside.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to go is in the morning before the restaurant opens. They allow people to have a look around before they start serving food at lunch. I definitely recommend this! The restaurant carved out of ice was such an experience to see!

The Bedrooms

During the day, the bedrooms are open to visitors, before the night guests arrive in the evening. They are brilliant to see, with all the different ice carvings.

If you are planning on staying the night, there’s a choice of 2 different style rooms to choose from, with 2 different price tags. There are the basic rooms which just have an ice bed and plain ice walls. However, if you want to make your stay that little bit more memorable, you will need to pay a little extra for a suite.

The suites have a fantastic ice sculpture beautifully carved out. Every room is different. My favourite suite had a fantastic ice sculpture of the White Walker, which is a character from the big TV series, Game of Thrones.
