If you planning a visit to the beautiful Town of Tobermory, then a walk to the lighthouse is well recommended!
I’m going to be honest with you guys, the walk itself isn’t one of my favourite walks on the island! You spend a good part of the route walking in trees. But when you do manage to get a break in the trees, you get some fabulous views over the Sound of Mull. Not only that, you get to see the famous Tobermory Lighthouse. All this makes the walk well worth doing!
The walk is 4 miles (6.4 km) long, on a well-marked path. The first part leads you along a track through the woods, along the edge of the Sound of Mull. The loop back towards Tobermory leads you up the hillside, giving you views from above, over the Sound of Mull.
Location
Tobermory is a colourful town located northeast coast of the Isle of Mull. A town famous for the TV show, Balamory and port for little cruise ships.
Parking
I’m not going to lie, parking in Tobermory can be a bit of a nightmare! It’s a popular town for tourists to visit! There is a fairly large car park next to the Whiskey Distillery, called Ledaig car park. But if you want a spot, I recommend getting there early!
If you can’t get parked there, there is a little street parking up the road where the housing estate is, south of Tobermory. Just head south along the A848, and turn right at the roundabout. But please, if you do choose to park here, park respectfully, as it is where the local residents live. The last thing we want, is the locals to be getting annoyed with the tourists.

The Route
Follow this map as you walk the route, and you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.
Walk the route anti-clockwise!
1.
Starting at Ledaig Car Park, next to the Whiskey Distillery, head into the town of Tobermory. Walk along the harbour front until you reach the CalMac Ferry Port. Here you should see a footpath forking off to the left of the ferry port.

Take the footpath and follow it until you reach Tobermory Lighthouse.

Once you’ve finished admiring the lighthouse, start your loop back towards Tobermory. Turn back on yourself, and follow the same path you came up on for a very short distance. After passing through the gate, before you reach the viewpoint with a picnic bench, you should see a little footpath going off to your right-hand side, leading you steeply up the hillside.
Please, if you are unsure at all, check the map!

Take the path a follow it as leads you up through the trees. Evenutally, you will come to a path junction and a clearing with views over the Sound of Mull.

Here, take the path forking off to your right-hand side. After a little while you reach Tobermory Golf Club.

Follow the path along the edge of the golf course, looking out the markers in the picture below.

Eventually, the path will lead you out of the golf course and into the woods. Just as you head into the woods, you will come to a path junction.

At the path junction, take the path going off to your left-hand side and follow it until you reach the road.
9.
Turn towards your left-hand side onto the road down, until you reach another road junction.
10.
At the road junction, turn to your left-hand side, and follow the road down into Tobermory. As you approach the colourful houses on the sea front, turn to your right-hand side and follow the path along the sea harbour back to the car park. This is where you started the walk from.
