On my 2-week road trip around the Balkans, Dubrovnik was one of my biggest highlights. If there’s one city to visit in Croatia, this is the one without a doubt!
Honestly, Dubrovnik is breathtaking!
Old Town Dubrovnik, located south of Croatia, is classed as a UNESCO heritage city. The city’s nickname is ‘the Pearl of the Adriatic’. A city rich in history, and picturesque landscapes. Over recent years it has become famous for being a filming location in the big TV show, ‘Game of Thrones.’
Here is everything to know when planning a visit:
Visiting With A Campervan
Parking in the centre of Dubrovnik is not easy, especially with a campervan. The roads are busy, and the car parks are small and expensive.
If you are visiting Dubrovnik in your Campervan, I recommend camping at Solitude Sunny Camping for two nights, Dubrovnik’s only campsite! It’s not a cheap campsite, but in my opinion, it’s worth paying a bit extra for the convenience. You can leave your van at the campsite and either walk or catch the bus into Old Town Dubrovnik. The walk from the campsite to the Old Town takes just under an hour.
Getting Around The City
The best way to get around Dubrovnik is on foot, by bus, by boat, or a slightly expensive option, by taxi.
When To Visit
Dubrovnik is a busy city all year round. However, it can get very busy during the summer months, especially on the days they have multiple cruise ships in port.

If you want to avoid very large crowds, but still would like the warm weather, I recommend visiting May or September. If you are not bothered about visiting in warmer weather, the months from October to April are best for being the quietest of times.

There’s plenty to do when visiting Dubrovnik. Here are my top recommendations:
Walk The City Walls
Walking the city walls of Dubrovnik needs to be at the top of your list when visiting the city! The views are incredible! It’s not cheap to do, but it’s worth the cost. At the time we visited in May 2023, it cost us 250 HRK (£29).
The walk is about 1.2 miles long talking you through 4 gates, past 2 round towers, 2 corner towers, 12 forts, and 5 bastions. You can walk them on your own or join a tour group.
Top Tip: If you are walking the walls on your own, I recommend walking them first thing in the morning or evening time. During the day, they can get very congested!

Catch The Cable Car Up Mount Srd
To me, getting up high is always a great idea! Sadly, on our visit, we are unable to go this as the cable car was shut due to bad weather.
At the top, you can go on a short hike to the summit of Mount Srd, enjoy a lovely meal at the cafe, visit the Homeland War Museum, or if you are feeling more adventurous, you can take a trip on the Buggy Safari.

Wonder The Streets
One of the best ways to see all the beautiful sites of Old Town Dubrovnik is to wander the streets and get lost down the back passageways. It’s a beautiful city full of so much history and character.
Not only is it a lovely city to have a potter around, but over the years it’s been used in many different big TV shows/movies, including Star Wars and Game of Thrones.
Any Star Wars fans? The main street, the Stradun was used for filming Star Wars Episode VIII.
Any Game of Thrones fans? You can do a guided Game of Thrones walking tour around the city, visiting all of the prime filming locations, including the location where they filmed King’s Landing. St. Dominika Street is where Cersei made her walk of shame. Minceta Tower was used as the House of the Undying. Pile Bay was used for Blackwater Bay.
