Fyrish Monument - Living With The Wolf

If you are staying near Inverness, or driving the NC 500, this is a walk I recommend doing! It’s only a short walk, but the views at the summit are something worth walking for. You can see for miles and miles over the Cromarty Firth, including the sight of the Oil Rig Graveyard.

The Fyrish Monument is a monument built in 1782 on Fyrish Hill. It was built to keep the locals in jobs to help them survive. As sadly, they were getting forced off the land they had worked on for centuries. I tell you what, they did an incredible job too! Fyrish Monument is truly impressive!

The walk is a 4-mile hike, on a well-marked path, leading you up Fyrish Hil, 453 metres (1486 feet) above sea level. It’s not a difficult walk, but correct footwear is a must as the path can get muddy and slippery when wet.

Location

Fyrish Monument is located near Alness, just an hour’s drive north, from the Highland capital, Inverness.

Parking

There is a car park at the start of the walk, called Fyrish Car Park. At the time we visited, parking was free of charge.

Starting at Fyrish Car Park, follow the marked footpath through the trees, and up Fyrish Hill. The path is pretty straightforward all the way up to Fyrish Monument. You just follow the path the same path, in the same direction all the way to the summit. You will cross over some other paths/tracks along the way.

Once you’ve finished taking in all the views at the summit, and got your photo of the incredible Fyrish Monument, retrace your footsteps back down, back towards the car park, where you started the walk from.
