Glenashdale Falls – Arran’s Most Spectacular Falls

If you love a waterfall, then this walk is a must! Glenashdale Falls is impressive! Known as one of the most famous waterfalls on the Isle of Arran, it will not disappoint!

Not only do you get to see a spectacular 45m (140 feet) waterfall, but the route itself is a beautiful circular, providing incredible views over Whiting Bay. If you are lucky, you might even see more red squirrels out on your walk too!

The walk is not a long walk nor is it particularly difficult. The route is just under 4 miles long, making it a great family-friendly walk! However, I recommend a good base level of fitness, some hiking experience, and good, sturdy footwear!

Location

The walk starts and finishes in Whiting Bay, on the east coast of Arran.

Parking

There are lots of little parking spots on the A841, south of Whiting Bay. At the time we visited, the parking spots were free of charge.

The Route

Follow this map, as you walk the route, and you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are, on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.

Walk the route anti-clockwise!

1.

Starting at one of the car parking spots on the A841, south of Whiting Bay, look for the start of the Glenashdale Falls trailhead. There should be a sign making the start of the trail.

2.

Take the path along the edge of the river, through the woods, until you reach a path junction. At the path junction continue along the footpath going forward, signposted to Glenashdale Falls.

3.

Follow the footpath up to Glenashdale Falls, where there is a wooden viewing platform over the magnificent waterfalls.

4.

After you have finished enjoying watching the power of the waterfall, continue on your path up. Very shortly, you should reach a path junction. Follow the path forking off to your left-hand side, signposted to Giants Graves.

5.

Soon, you will reach yet another path junction. Again, take the track going off to your left-hand side signposted Giants Graves.

6.

As you head along the dirt track, lookout for little viewpoints along the way. You will get some incredible views over Whiting Bay!

If you are following along on the map, you will be able to see where we detoured off to get to a fantastic viewpoint over Whiting Bay.

7.

After a short while, you should see a path going off to your left-hand side, signposted to Giants Graves. Take the path, until you reach a pile of rocks on your left-hand side. This is Giants Graves. If you continue a little further along the path, there is a board with some information about the rocks.

8.

After you have enjoyed admiring the Giants Graves, continue along the path, heading downhill, back towards the path beside the river. As you reach the path junction, turn to your right-hand side, and follow the path back to Whiting Bay. This is where you started the walk from.
