This walk is a ‘must-do’ on the Isle of Mull! The views are just incredible!
The walk is only just over 2.5 miles (4 km), along a well-marked path. A path that leads you up a little hill, to where you will be greeted with the beautiful Crater Loch. You then loop around the top, ticking off the summit of Sairde Airde Being, just under 300 metres (984 feet).
It may only be a little hill, but on a clear day, you can see views for miles!
Location
Crater Loch is located in the North of Mull, along the B8073, not too far from the Town of Tobermory.
If you are searching for the location on Google Maps, Crater Loch is known as The Volcano Plug.
Parking
There is a small car park opposite Loch Meadhoin at the start of the trail. On Google Maps, it’s referred to as the ‘Small car park’, and it lives up to its name!
So if you are visiting in peak season, get there early to get a parking spot!

The Route
Follow this map as you walk the route, and you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.
Walk the route clockwise around the loch!
1.
Starting from the small car park, head towards your right-hand side, onto the B8073. Travelling westwards along the B8073, very shortly you should see a gate on your right-hand side.
2.
Head through the gate and follow the footpath upwards, passing through another gate, until you reach a path junction.
3.
At the path junction, take the path forking off to your left-hand side, and follow it as it leads you up onto the ridge. Eventually, you will be greeted with the beautiful Crater Loch.
4.
Follow the path along the ridge to the summit of Sairde Airde Being.
5.
Once you’ve finished admiring the views at the summit, continue along the path, looping around the opposite side of Crater Loch. Eventually, the path will lead you down off the ridge and towards a path junction.
6.
At the path junction, take the path going off to your left-hand side, and follow it back down to the B8073, retracing your steps from earlier on along the walk.
7.
As you head through the gate onto the B8073, turn to your left-hand side and follow the road for a short distance. Very shortly, you should reach the car park, where you started the walk from.
