Old Man Of Storr, Isle Of Skye
Hiking Isle Of Skye Walks

Old Man Of Storr

Heading to the Isle Of Skye? Then this walk definitely should be on your list! The Old Man Of Storr is one of the most photographed areas on the whole of Skye. After my visit myself, I can see why! It’s a truly impressive rock formation!

The walk from the Old Man Of Storr car park is a lovely 2.5-mile loop.

To do this walk I recommend good footwear and the correct clothing. You are in the mountains so the correct gear is important. The weather can change in minutes! We got caught in a big hail storm at the top, and then sunshine coming down. When the paths get wet, they can get slippery, so footwear with a grip on is important.

To reach the Old Man Of Storr, you have to climb around 140 metres. It’s only a short climb and the views at the top make it rewarding. It is an easy route to navigate, on well-marked maps, and popular with hikers.

Location

The Old Man Of Storr is located on the Trotternish peninsula, north of the Isle Of Skye. It’s located 6-miles north of Portree, the capital of Skye.

Parking

There is a fairly large car park at the start of the route for the Old Man Of Storr. It is a pay and display car park.

The Route

Follow this map, as you walk the route, you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are, on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.

1.

Starting at the Old Man Of Storr car park, head through the metal gate, and follow the path uphill. Shortly you will reach a path junction. Take the path that goes off to your right-hand side and follow up towards the Old Man Of Storr. After a little while, you will pass another path joining you on your left-hand side. Continue on, heading uphill towards the Old Man Of Storr.

2.

Once you reach the summit of the Old Man Of Storr, taken in the great views, and snapped some photos, start to retrace your steps back down until you reach a path junction. At the path junction, take the path going off to your right-hand side.

3.

Follow the path round, passing a little tarn on your left-hand side. Eventually, you will rejoin the original path, which will lead you back down to the car park, where you started the walk from.
