The Quiraing is one of my favourite spots on the whole of the Isle Of Skye! The incredible, scenic landslip is located North of Skye, in the Trotternish area. If you are going to do any walks on the island, this is the one to do! Even if you don’t want to walk, just visit the car park. The views at the car park, are just incredible!
If you are planning on doing the walk, please make sure you are prepared for all-mountain weather. You are very exposed along the trail to all-mountain conditions. The correct outdoor clothing, footwear, and gear are a must. Also please make sure you have a map on you.
The walk is a moderate-difficulty, 4-mile route. In places, expect narrow mountain paths, with a drop on one side. The path is well-marked most of the way. In the last part coming off the ridge, the path is hard to make out, so please take care, and keep a close eye on the map.
Location
The Quiraing is located in the Trotternish area, North of the Isle of Skye. The Quiraing car park is just a 10-minute drive west from Staffin and a 14-minute drive from Idrigil. If you are heading from the capital Portree, it’s about a 30-40 minute drive, north.
Parking
The walk starts from the large pay and display, Quiraing car park. We arrived at midday in May and managed to get parked easily in our camper van, Casper. However, in high season, I can imagine the car park will get full. So you may want to try and get there early.
The Route
Follow this map, as you walk the route, you shouldnât get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are, on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.
1.
Starting at the Quiraing car park, cross the road and head to the start of the trail, marked Cuith-Raing. Follow the footpath going off to your right-hand side, along the side of the mountainside.
2.
Follow the path past the needle, and up onto the ridge. As you head onto the ridge, you will pass 2 paths going off to your right-hand side.
3.
Once you’ve made it on the ridge, take the path going off to your left-hand side and follow it upwards, towards the summit of Meall Na Suiramach. You will notice the path goes around the summit and not over. You can detour off if you want to tick off the summit.
4.
As you reach the top of the ridge, the path starts to fade away. Carefully, make your way along the edge of the ridge, slowly descending down, back towards the car park. Make sure you regularly check the map, to make sure you are heading in the right direction at all times. On the last part of the descent, the path is steep, so please take care.
5.
Eventually, you will rejoin the path you started the walk on. Turn towards your right-hand side, and follow the path back to the car park, where you started the walk from.
