Split, located on the Dalmatian Coast, is Croatia’s second-largest city. The city is famous for the ruins of the Palace of Diocletian, fantastic nightlife, and being a good spot for catching ferries to picturesque islands in the Adriatic Sea.
BE AWARE: Split seafront stinks of rotten eggs! It’s no sewage, it’s supposedly sulphur!
During the Roman times, emperor Diocletian built a spa, using the sulphur water. In the 20th century, it was declared the highest quality medicinal mineral water in Europe!
Split’s Hidden Gem
Wondering the streets of Split is pretty fun to do! Getting lost down all the different alleyways, exploring all the historical sites, and visiting local independent shops. However, the one thing I love to do, wherever I am, is to get up high!
Personally, my favourite thing to do in Split is to head up Marjan Hill, located in Park Šuma Marjan. Climbing up above Split, and seeing the scale of the city from above is pretty spectacular!
It’s Not A Hike!
Don’t worry, if you are thinking hiking isn’t your cup of tea, this isn’t a hike! It’s what a call a walk up a small hill, on well-paved paths!
No walking boots are needed, just a sensible pair of footwear is advised, i.e. a comfy pair of trainers. However, one thing I do recommend is to bring plenty of water, especially if you’re visiting on a hot summer’s day!
The walk is only a short 2-mile route. However, Marjan Hill is 178 meters (578.8 feet) high. Therefore, there is a climb up to the summit and a lot of steps. So some good physical ability is needed!
Start And Finish Points
The route starts and finishes in slightly different locations. However, if you are coming from Split’s city centre, it’s easy to navigate to and from.
Starting Location: Marjan Hill Stairs – Marasovića ul., 21000, Split
Finish Location: Šperun Square (Trg Šperun) – Šperun ul., 21000, Split
The Route
Follow this map, as you walk the route, you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are, on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.
1.
Starting at the trailhead, Marjan Hill Stairs. Head up the stairs until you reach a viewpoint and a little church.
This was one of my favourite views over Split!
2.
Once you’ve finished enjoying the views from the viewpoint, continue to walk west, until you reach a lovely, little church.
3.
At the church take the path going off to your right-hand side, leading you the hillside to Natural History Museum and Zoo, where you will reach a path junction.
4.
At the path junction, take the path going off to your left-hand side, and follow past another viewpoint, a park area, and an outdoor theatre. Just after the park, look out for a path going off to your left-hand side.
5.
Take the path going off to your left-hand side and follow the steps up to the summit of Marjan Hill.
6.
Once you finished enjoying the views at the summit, and got your summit selfie, start retracing your steps back down towards Natural History Museum and Zoo.
7.
At Natural History Museum and Zoo, instead of turning towards your right-hand side (the way you came up), carry on travelling forwards, until you reach the end of the park.
8.
Slightly, curve round to your right-hand side, and take the footpath leading onto Senjska ul (street). Follow the street, as it leads you back into split city centre, marking the end of the trail.
