My Weekly Lupus Diary

Sprained Ankle And Hiatus Hernia

What a lovely Sunday morning! Sleeping at 270 metres above sea level in the Scottish Highlands, waking up to the sun shining through the windows of our van. These are my kind of perfect Sunday mornings!

Meet Casper the friendly Camper:

Today is our 6-year anniversary. Yes, poor Alex has had to put up with me for 6 long years! We are currently sitting in the same location as we were 2 years ago, celebrating our 4 year anniversary. How strange is that! We didn’t plan it like that, it just happened!

We are spending our anniversary emptying the toilet of our motorhome, a glamorous day it will be! Not sure whose job it’s going to be! We are also out of clean water too!

After we’ve done all the chores, we might have some fun! There’s a walk I would like to do. Only a short, low-level walk, but it’s meant to be nice. I’m aching from yesterday’s walk, so taking it easy today!

Yesterday was one brilliant day! We climbed a Corbett at 846 metres. It was Alex’s first Scottish mountain and his first Corbett. The views were incredible! It brought back so many childhood memories of my time walking in the Scottish Highlands as a kid. I felt so strong and well to which made me super happy!

I haven’t climbed any mountains in a long while so I was quite worried about how my body was going to react. But it did amazing! Thank you wolf, thank you for allowing me to do what I love so much. Days like yesterday, I really appreciate. 2 years ago when I visited Scotland, climbing a Corbett would just not have been possible. Just shows you, things are still possible with a chronic illness, it’s just about getting it under control and managing it. But at the time, I don’t take moments for granted. I may be able to climb mountains today, but next year it could be a different story again! Hopefully not though!

Sprained Ankle

Beginning of the week I sprained my ankle. Perfect timing right before my holiday! I then cockled back over on it yesterday, coming down off the mountain. I’m not going to lie, it’s sore. But at the same time, I’m not going to let it spoil my holiday! I know by walking on it, I’m not damaging it, it’s just painful. I just drug myself up with painkillers and I’m ok. Well just as longs as I don’t keep cockling over on it.

I have hypermobility in my ankles so my feet move more than they should. I have sprained my right ankle so many times, coming down off mountains, backpacking, snowboarding, and now trail running. I notice every time I go skiing, because you put a lot of weight onto your ankles, my right ankle always hurts. It’s become weak from all the injuries over the years.

Rheumatology Appointment

I had a telephone appointment with Rheumatology on Wednesday. A long-overdue appointment. I mentioned about my ankle to them, and how I’m always cockling over on it, etc. She has arranged for me to see someone about it.

My appointment went well. She said she’s going to try and get to come into the clinic on my next appointment, but only if it’s safe to do so with the pandemic. She’s happy with how I’m doing and said she’s going to try and chase on some of my other overdue appointments with some of my other consultants.

Hiatus Hernia

I had a Barium Meal back in February. She asked if I had the results back. I explained I hadn’t yet as I’m still waiting to see my Gastro consultant. So she kindly had a look for me. I’ve got a Hiatus Hernia. She said the Gastro consultant will explain more when I see her next, but this explains why I’m having so much trouble with my stomach, why I’m struggling to eat certain foods, and why I can’t lay down flat on a night.

I Have Antibodies

I mentioned in my previous blogs about an antibody test to see how many antibodies I’ve got from the COVID vaccine. I received my results this week. I have 250. It’s not a lot as most people will get over 2500 but it’s better than nothing. Plus I also had the vaccine back in December, so I’m guessing you will lose some over time.

Shingles Rash

I still have my shingles rash, still taking my Amitriptyline. Every now and again, I get a little bit of pain, reminding me it’s still there! I think I’ve had it for 8 weeks now, quite a while!

Anyways that’s it from me, we better get this toilet emptied.

Until next week,

Goodbye for now

Emma
