My Weekly Lupus Diary

Verrucas and Being Immunocompromised

This weekend, plans haven’t gone quite to plan, but it’s ok, as I’ve still had a lovely weekend! And for once, our change of plans was nothing to do with the wolf. To be fair on the wolf, he’s doing alright. He’s chilling quietly at the minute. Other than the rash on my finger, a bit of sinus trouble, and sore knees, he’s not causing too much bother. Just how I like it!

Basically, long story short, we originally had planned to get away in Casper this weekend. A weekend to destress and give ourselves a break from all the wedding planning. However, last month when we headed to Norfolk for the weekend, we found out about a Calor Gas 4.5kg bottle shortage. Our van runs on gas for the heating, fridge, hot water, and cooking. So as you can imagine, a gas bottle shortage has caused us big problems!

As we are wanting to use our van for our mini-honeymoon, we had to urgently think of some solution to the problem. So we decided to solve the biggest gas usage in the van. My dad and Alex have done a fabulous job of fitting in a diesel heater for heating. But like all jobs, it took longer than expected to get fitted. Therefore, the van wasn’t ready until evening last night to go away in. Alex was exhausted from working on the van all day, I was pretty tired myself from being in the kitchen all day baking wedding cakes, so we decided to stay at home and just get out for a local walk today instead.

Today has been lovely! I live on the edge of the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds. So lucky to have all this beauty on my doorstep. If you’ve followed me for some time, you will remember the days when I was shielding and couldn’t travel far. Instead, I got myself out on a lot of local walks and runs. It was all I could do for weeks on end, but it really taught me to appreciate what is on my doorstep and not to take it for granted.

Here are some photos from today’s walk:

Verrucas

I first noticed a verruca on my foot back in January. I didn’t really think much about it. I’ve had them before, and yes I know they can be painful to walk on, but I just ignored it. Since January, they have spread. Both feet are now covered in them, in lots of sore clusters.

So last week, I decided I probably should get them seen too. I spoke to the doctor, and she was fantastic with me. Because I am immunocompromised, I shouldn’t ignore them. Fighting them off on my own we likely be too difficult as my immune system isn’t strong enough and if I just continued to ignore them, they will just continue to get worse, and maybe in the end it might get too painful to walk.

My doctor has prescribed me Salatac Gel to use daily on them until healed. Not sure how long it will take, but I’m hoping it’s not too long. The gel leaves a white film over each verruca, so my feet look very white and spotty at the minute. It’s a good job I don’t ever go barefoot due to my poor circulation. But then that makes me question where I actually caught the verrucas from in the first place?

That’s it from me this weekend. I think I’m going to make a start on our mini-honeymoon planning this afternoon. Our mini-honeymoon is going to be a fun road trip in Casper. Our main honeymoon is Route 66, but it’s not till May. We love a good road trip! Now I know we have heating in the van, I think we might head up to the Scottish Highlands. We would like to do a bit of skiing, but not sure how much snow there is up there at the minute, and how many slopes are open as it’s getting towards the end of ski season.

Anyways, until next week,

Goodbye for now,

Emma
