The Hole of Horcum is one of the most famous walks in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, in the picturesque Tabular Hills. It is a huge natural amphitheatre, 400-feet deep, and more than half a mile across. It’s so beautiful to walk, especially in Autumn. The area fills with beautiful Autumn colours.
If you are lucky, you may see some Highland Cattle wondering along your footpath. Sadly, we didn’t see any!
The best time to do this walk is first thing in the morning. The earlier you start it, the quieter it will be! We started it at 9 am and didn’t start seeing people until 11 am. The walk is a fairly easy, 6.5-mile route.
Location/Parking
When people come to the park to walk the Hole of Horcum, they quite often park in the chargeable car park at the Hole of Horcum. Instead, I decided to start and finish the route in the village, Levisham, where the car parking is free. You will see the Hole of Horcum car park, about halfway along the route.
The Route
Follow this map, as you walk the route, you shouldn’t get lost! Make sure your location is turned on and you should be able to see exactly where you are, on this map. Or if you prefer, download the GPX file and use it on your choice of route tracker.

Starting in the village of Levisham, head south out of the village. Just as you leave the village, you should notice a signpost on your left-hand side. Take the footpath and follow it through the woods, along Levisham Brow.

Eventually, you should reach a path junction. Carrying on walking in the same direction, following the signpost to Hole of Horcum. Just as you pass the second signpost to the Hole of Horcum, you will have to cross over Levisham Beck. Follow the footpath to Low Horcum.

Follow the footpath along Low Horcum, passing an abandoned house on your right-hand side. Follow the path as it ascents up towards the road. Here you should be able to see the Hole of Horcum car park, just down the road.

At the top, take the footpath on your left-hand side. Follow the well-marked footpath, taking you along the tops of Levisham Moors. If you’re lucky, you may see some Highland Cattle roaming freely. Follow the footpath for a while. Eventually, you will reach a signpost.

At the signpost, continue walking in the same direction, following the sign to Levisham. Pass through the gate and walk along a farm track, back into Levisham, where you started the walk from.
